One of the characters in the APB MMORPG by Realtime Worlds - Image 1While it's a fairly common practice for an MMORPG to have one company as a developer and the other as a distributor, there are cases wherein one company takes on both roles. Such is the case with Realtime Worlds, which recently regained global distribution rights to the MMORPG All Points Bulletin. More on this in the full article after the jump.

WEBZEN's Huxley MMOFPS - Image 1

We have just picked up a press wire announcing that WEBZEN has begun close beta testing in Korea for their Huxley MMOFPS. The beta tests commenced yesterday (September 13), and are expected to last for five days. The 999 beta players had been selected from a recent online sign-up from August 28 to September 6. Players will be allowed to access the game daily from 2 p.m. until 12:00 p.m. midnight.

The players will be starting off at level 19 in-game - instead of the usual level 1 in most MMORPGs and MMOFPS - to give them access to the higher-level equipment at a much earlier stage. Huxley's players are given access to the city, where they can mingle and interact with fellow testers.

Features for Huxley's closed beta include PvP modes such as team death match and radar domination, and single player quests. That's all the news we've got for the moment - check back again for future Huxley-related updates.

Huxley - Image 1The9, the same game operator who brought World of Warcraft to China, has announced that it has entered into an agreement with Webzen Inc. for an exclusive license to operate the MMOFPS, Huxley, in China.

Huxley takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where human beings have mutated and divided into two warring races, Sapiens and Alternative. In addition to that, The9 has also secured an exclusive license to operate another MMO,  Soul of the Ultimate Nation. According to Jun Zhu, The9's Chairman and CEO:

We are very pleased that The9 obtained, in addition to Soul of The Ultimate Nation(TM), another exclusive license to operate a high-caliber game from Webzen in mainland China. The FPS style game is one of the key genres of online games. With unique game features and a clear-cut FPS focus, we believe Huxley has much prospects for the Chinese online game market, and will further enhance and diversify The9's game portfolio.

With WoW, Guild Wars, and Huxley in its midst, The9's efforts for higher profits is looking to be something that is attainable.

Here it comes... - Image 1

After a rather long period of lull, the Korean game publisher Webzen is back with new updates on their upcoming MMORPG, Huxley. Bound to be released some time this year, this MMO title makes use of the Unreal Engine 3, and is expected to bowl over both PC and XBox 360 gamers with its detailed graphics and physics.

A game that can be more accurately refer ed to as an MMOFPS, the game is set in a post-apocalyptic world where humans are still reeling from the effects of massive natural disasters. As if that wasn't enough, humans were divided into two opposing races: the Alternatives who have undergone major mutations after being exposed to powerful energy sources known as Lunarites, and the Sapiens who were treated as slaves once the Alternatives discovered that they are physically stronger than the Sapiens.

Scheduled to be released some time this year, we can't wait to see what Webzen has managed to make with the Unreal Engine.

Realtime Worlds

Independent video game developer Realtime Worlds received a whopping US $ 31 million from New Enterprise Associates (NEA) to build new video game franchises and recruit top programming and game development talent from around the world. Realtime Worlds is currently polishing its first exclusive Xbox 360 game, Crackdown, set to be released sometime 2007. In addition,  the company is also working on All Points Bulletin, an original MMOG for PC and Xbox 360 in partnership with Korea">Webzen of Korea.

Realtime World said the big bucks will allow them to do "extraordinary things." One of those extraordinary things would be developing a global centre of excellence for some of the world’s best games developers. Some of the money will also go into building "new gaming experiences" for the Xbox 360 and PC.

Huxley

When we mention the lines "MMO", the thought that goes into most people's heads is the usual fare of leather/iron-clad guys running around in some deep, dark dungeon, smacking away with medieval swords, or nuking away with some archaic incantation.

Well, we've been looking over this recently released gameplay trailer for Webzen's Huxley MMOFPS, and while we do see a lot of leather/iron-clad guys, we also see a lot of what we love about FPS: Grenade launchers, machine guns, and all that smells of wonderful, wonderful cordite...ahhh.

The trailer was also kind enough to show us bits and pieces of the online community - at least when they're not trying to blow each other of the maps, and while it has a very strange semblance to the recently released GoW, we're hoping Webzen delivers on their promise that the RPG aspect to this soon-to-launch Korean MMOFPS adds a degree of immersiveness to its genre.
