This information comes from Virtual World Management, a leading media company that tracks the virtual worlds industry. The biggest chunk of the US$1 billion came from Disney's acquisition of Club Penguin, an online game from New Horizon Interactive where kids take control of cartoon penguin avatars to waddle around, play minigames and chat with their friends. This acquisition cost Disney US$ 700 million. Intel's US$ 110-million acquisition of 3D virtual worlds graphics technology company Havok made up the second-biggest part of the figure. If you plan on playing Flying Lab Software and Disney's Pirates of the Burning Sea and want to do so in style, here's your chance to do so. The developers plan on creating an organization called The Boarding Party which will grant select members of the community a chance to participate in various community events. The Boarding Party will be able to organize exclusive Pirates of the Burning Sea gatherings and help make announcements about changes to the game. A few of the members might even get a chance to accompany Flying Lab Software staff at conventions and events. Others will be selected to join a small task force which provides direct feedback to developers regarding game features in beta testing and the full game. Joining this group, take note, is not a right but a privilege. With that said, some players will not be accepted or get the chance to participate. When you really think about it however, there are only so many roles to be filled. Still, this might be the chance to rub shoulders with the developers and take a more active role in developing the game. Click on our Read link for more details on how to apply for this. |

If you've ever wondered how a cross between Disney's song-infested animated movies and Blizzard's Word of Warcraft would work, here's your chance to find out. The guys behind the ever-so-popular Looking For Group comic recently released a fully-animated teaser of what could be the most twisted - and most hilarious - spoof that the internet, in all its insanity, could ever come up with.
If you have any tots or kiddies watching, you'd do well to have them not see this teaser, as it's a bit graphic. While we can't help but laugh at the idea of an undead warlock singing something along the lines of a cheery Disney song while killing people, the violence goes beyond the usual cartoony sort we're used to - decapitation, exploding cats, and so on. But it's still funny. Anyway, courtesy of Blind Ferret Entertainment, it's the Looking For Group: Slaughter Your World teaser video! Enjoy! |

Disney has given word that Pirates of the Caribbean will be a little delayed. This was done to allegedly give developers more time to enhance the game, implement some of the suggestions by the beta-testers, and fix a few of the bugs that cropped up during its beta testing. The first beta will be ending this July 16. It has been announced that a second testing will occur this September, presumably with all the tweaks for the game implemented and the bugs ironed out. Of course the developers aren't going to be leaving the community hanging just like that that. They've given word in their press release that, In the meantime, we will continue to support and grow the strong community that has congregated around Pirates of the Caribbean Online through monthly developer diaries and newsletters, the delivery of new screen shots and assets, hosting a variety of in-game and fan events and through other exciting creative campaigns. So it looks like we won't be able to let our friends "walk the plank" any time soon. Still, we hope the developers really use the time to polish the game because a lot of the players were really impressed at what they've already done. It would be a shame if the game didn't turn out good. |

In its aim to build up Disney Interactive Studios, Disney will continue "ramping up" its games focus and will spend a significant amount of funds on games development, Disney CFO Tom Staggs announced. This was brought on by the success of its first UK number one rating and the success of the game adaptation of the Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. Disney now wants to do more than churn out movie-and-game tie-ins.The company is planning to burn US$ 130 million toward games development for this year - definitely a big jump from US$ 100 million from last year. However, Staggs is planning to triple the budget to US$ 350 million annually. He further explains: We are ramping up our investment in video games. It is a market where there is real opportunity. Over the next five years or so we are ramping up to about a pace of $350 million per year in video game investment, principally consoles and handhelds...We are early on in the process of developing a video gaming capability, and as a developer and publisher our activities have been very limited. Its game-related activities may be limited right now, but with the kind of spending money, the fact that it has already acquired Climax Racing, and the announcement that Disney is already planning a Pirates of the Caribbean-themed MMO this year, we'll definitely see Disney in the games business more often in the near future. |

Disney revealed quite a few details about their upcoming MMO projects during an interview about their highly-anticipated massively multiplayer online game Pirates of the Caribbean Online. No specifics as of yet, but one thing that stood out is a Cars MMO, based on the Pixar CG animated movie of the same name. No, we kid you not.Mike Goslin, vice president of the VR Studio, says that while they're busy dealing with the launch of Pirates of the Caribbean Online (as well as a full year's worth of follow-on content), they're also busy with several new projects. They didn't quite reveal what these projects were and what Disney property they're based on, but they did express an interest in doing Pixar properties, namely Cars. Goslin also touched on a project with princesses and fairies. As one would expect, they would be designed for girls. We're not too sure what to think of this. A Massively Multiplayer Online Game, with a car as your character? It's certainly unique and is an interesting license to give the online game treatment. As always, updates as they happen, so keep it locked right here. |
