WHAT? WHO?!? - Image 1"You spend too much time playing videogames." Yep, we've heard pretty much every variation of that line over the years. More often than not, parents usually direct that line towards their teenage kids, but a recent study has dug up some surprising answers to the question of who does the most online gaming.

Here's a hint: I'm not part of the leading demographic, and most likely, you aren't either.

According to KXAN.com, a 125-page casual games white paper published by the International Games Developers Association that reveals the who, the what and the why of online-gaming participants reveals that women between 35 and 45 years of age make up the largest block of online players. That's right, OUR MOMS make up the bulk of online gamers.

KXAN also points towards a separate report by AOL which revealed that women over the age of 40 spend just over nine hours a week gaming online. Teenagers only came in second place, with 7.4 hours per week. Adult men bring up the rear, with only 6.1 hours a week in the online-gaming world. As for top gaming cities, the research cites Atlanta and Boston as the top gaming cities in the country.

Weird, huh? Leave a comment and let us know what you think.

 » Only question is...

Well, this begs the question of: What does this survey define as an online game? If we're talking strictly console online gaming, then there is no way that same statistic can be applied. PC games get into a bit fuzzier definition, because depending on what the survey defines a game as it could range from anything like WOW to Yahoo games.

I would imagine that this particular survey would've included ALL online gaming, and that women might play more online hearts (for example) on yahoo.

Or, it could just be that most women are stupid and don't really understand what online gaming REALLY is. But that's just a theory.

My mom's favorite game's are:

1. Google Search
2. Google Maps
3. Google Translator

I got her to buy a Wii after I showed her that all her favorite games run on it's Opera browser. The only thing is...I think she's using the internet about 1 hour a week...though she says she'll watch tv while she's plays with google online, so since she watches 1 hour of soaps and 1 hour of opera a day, that's 10 hours a week of online gaming. Now does it make sense?

Replies like that proves you wrong. Stupid.

It does not take a lot of intelligence to know that it is often moms that stay home to keep the house (and I don't want to put prejudice, I base those info on statistic) so new mothers, homeworkers etc... might take an hour between two tasks to play a game on yahoo game.... oh my god it is online gaming!!!!!

Here you got the explanation. Online gaming isn't only with the games you play, there's a lot of games out there for all kind of people.

Think a bit before writing things that only makes us, the male gender, seems like stupid prehistoric morons that can't think outside our world.

I think you're all forgetting about the online casinos.

My mom is a huge fan of the yahoo online games. Zuma, Sudoku and Pool-- games like those. I think women probably tend to play those a bit more than they'd touch Gears of War or Resistance, so I think this survey may be spot on.

Lets not forget that the survey is on Online games, not Multiplayer games.

Not a chance in hell that is true.

That demographic couldn't be more out of touch with technology. There is no way they would spend more time gaming than teenage-adult males.

Furthermore, what man allows his woman out of the kitchen long enough to play a game?

 » I dislike these "Surveys"

Simply put, they consider simple flash, card and poker games the same as MMO's and other online video games, which they shouldn't be doing. Of course mothers are going to look like the "BIG ONLINE GAMERS" when you look at those type of games because gamers are off playing real video games and not wasting their time with "Online Bejewled" or stupid surveys.

Most of the guildies in WoW that I play with are older, and married. Our class leader, Beckie has 2 kids and plays more than me cause she's a stay at home mom. Older people around that age group have more stable lifes and jobs and they can devote time into playing online games.. it's funny you say that they play yahoo games when all I see is them playing MMOs. The top guild on our realm, Lost Anarchy has around 50-60 'older people' half of which are females and other males, most married to each other and just in the same guild.
