Help IslandsAll in all, how many people are there in the world right now? Seven billion? Whatever the exact figure is, we are sure that the world is getting more and more crowded and problems are arising left and right. For a while, we kind of hope that real life gets a help system as useful and as helpful as that in the MMO Second Life.

The growing popularity of this MMO could be attributed to publicity and steadfast support of real-life companies such as entertainment conglomerate Sony and news agency Reuters. As of today, developer Linden Lab expects a maximum number of 10,000 new accounts everyday. The virtual world's Welcome Areas are always busy.

As a response, a total of nine help islands were opened up last night. That means 45 Help and Orientation Islands in all, with a capacity to deal with approximately 2,250 people. Clearly, this wouldn't suffice and accommodate all at once the great influx of newbies.

Regardless, this means business is doing great and we could just imagine the big grin on Linden Lab's virtual face. We expect more help islands to be made available all over the virtual world immediately...lest they want to upset customers.

 » Surreal

It was pretty surreal to wake up yesterday and see all this happening — I did a tour on the Orientation Islands and helped replace landmarks to provide more destination points to the mainland. (Full disclosure: I work for Linden Lab as well as personally blogging about Second Life @ http://torley.com .)

I can hear the oldtimers sayin' it now, "I remember when there was just ONE Help Island!" sort of like that "one Enterprise" joke from Star Trek that I think Scotty made.

It was also really action-packed to see all the new Resis birthed, first in gray, and some nekkid (due to a bug), and then they rushed forth to live their Second Lives.

Goodness goshness!

That, and ooo we have "Help Island Public" open now. Just look for that exact region name on the World Map. :)
