Top industry players such as Intel, Microsoft, Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) are going to establish the "PC Gaming Alliance," reports veteran video games journalist Dean Takahashi. According to Takahashi, the announcement of such alliance will happen at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco next week.

The group's objective is to keep PC gaming competitive amidst the emergence of the Nintendo Wii's pick up and play games and the Microsoft Xbox 360's robust online features, said Takahashi.

The PC Gaming Alliance consortium is believed to address "problems that make the PC a less desirable platform than consoles for playing games." Among these is the constant worry of gamers about actually being able to play certain titles on their machines. Another goal is to attract game developers to make games on the platform.

Dean Takahashi previously revealed exciting details about the next Xbox 360 motherboard codenamed "Jasper." While we are yet to find the supposedly cheaper consoles equipped with that in the market, GDC will tell if he's on the money this time.
