Celestial Nights - Image 1

The folks at PlayOnline have revealed a new event for Square Enix's Final Fantasy XI fans to get into, and it certainly looks to have a rather sentimental feel to it. The event, known as Celestial Nights, will be open to the gaming public on June 29 at 1 p.m. PDT.

Here's the write up of the lore for Celestial Nights:

During the festival of Celestial Nights, people write poems to their faraway loved ones on strips of brightly colored paper, which are then tied to bamboo stalks. These arcing stalks of bamboo represent a bridge that spans the great river in the night sky.

It's reminiscent of the tale behind the Tanabata festival where, each year, two separated lovers (represented by the Vega and Altair stars) are reunited across the cosmos by magpies, who form a bridge for the two across the great river (the Milky Way galaxy). In this case, we're one of the (literally) star-crossed lovers, with our loved ones on the other side.

In any case, expect some new quests, some spiffy Celestial-themed gear, and a whole lot of fun once the celebration is at hand on the lands of Vana'diel.
