Objection! - Image 1 Sticks and stones may break one's bones, but words will hurt forever. At least, it's the case with the usage of the word "rape" as far as the fairer gender of the wow_ladies livejournal community are concerned.

Livejournal user itsyspy70 recently posted an open letter to all young male guildmembers, pleading that they refrain from using the word rape. She explains that while not being appropriate, usage of the word is also potentially hurtful and harmful to a great many people currently enjoying World of WarCraft.

She also says that while not being a a victim of the cruel deed herself, she understands that it's a very traumatic experience and should not be made light of. While most of the replies were positive and supported user itsyspy70 on the matter, one particular reply piqued the attention of yours truly, and it speaks volumes. Here it is in full, by Livejournal user tamchronin:

Wow. I really AM the only girl in the guild who doesn't agree with you. I've been raped. I use the term all the time in game, and have the ability to remove the association with the horribly traumatic events in my life from the playful "Yeah, we totally raped that boss" or "Damn, that mob totally raped me."

I can choose to be offended by every little thing that I come across in my life, or I can get on with my life and take back my power. I'm not a victim. I'm a survivor. And part of surviving is acknowledging that the world is not going to change and pussy foot around me and treat me as special just because something bad happened to me.

Strong words, indeed. What about you, readers? What's your take on this whole matter? You can peruse the letter in full by clicking on the read link below, and let us know what you think by your comments.

stop control how people communicate with each other. if you don't like it, you know where the power button on your computer is. or is that too hard?

This person's argument is valid but also very naive and contentious. The use of derogatory language for fun or ill is obviously inappropriate. Whether in real life or in fantasy, words can be very powerful and can easily hurt someone if used in a malicious way. Yet, one must also realize that the meaning of words expands and evolves and can become something completely different in time. The context of rape in this case has absolutely nothing to do with physical rape or forced sex of any manner. More so it is used as a childish way of emphasizing the difference of degree of power of one individual over another and the likelihood of the weaker opponents defeat within the videogame. Words adapt to culture, it just so happens that nowadays the younger generation uses the word rape more often in a kinder note and have altered its meaning. How many words can you think of that have had a similar fate?

 » Sad

I had a conversation on my guild's forums, oh quite a while ago now, on this very topic. A female guildie posted a very similar open letter to the guild, very similar to the above, saying that while it was not a frequent thing for the word "rape" to be flung around in guild chat, it did happen, and politely asking that people refrain from speaking so in future.

Anyway, a great many people posted their support and agreement. Some apologized and said that while they had used "rape" as a synonym for "pwn" in the past, they would not do so in the future.

But the infuriating thing.. several people (all young adult males), who were not actually people who I'd ever noticed saying such things, posted long-winded and passionate freedom-of-speech arguments, insisting that guild chat not be censored, that everyone knew perfectly well that "that mob totally raped me" actually meant "that mob totally outclassed, defeated and annihilated me" and was in no way a reference to the actual act of rape, etc. etc. It just made me want to bang my head against a wall to see that people who I thought were mostly good people were so socially stunted that they simply could not realise when it is appropriate to respect the feelings of people who are their FRIENDS and GUILDMATES, rather than trying to stick it to The Man and strike a blow for "freedom of speech". Very sad, and I lost a lot of respect for some people who I previously had quite a bit of respect for.

And what do you know? Here's a comment right here from "Who cares?" saying EXACTLY the same thing. If a guildmate of yours, a friend who you'd been gaming with possibly for a long time, asked you to moderate your language because it caused offence and hurt, that's your reply? "Go away, turn off your computer, stop trying to control me". It's so obvious and so depressing that some people just don't understand that the other characters running around in-game are actually not just computer-controlled mobs that behave somewhat unpredictably, but real people.

 » Hm.

I see where you're coming from but honestly, if people started to ask people not to use other little words that meant NOTHING of what the real root of the word meant then what the *****? Should we stop calling losers "noobs" if they suck or are amateurs cause "it hurts their feelings"?

No. If you don't like the talk then go somewhere else. This is a *****ing GAME not REAL LIFE. When you play online games you should know by now that people can talk smack and ***** and pretty much get away with it (they are probably thousands of miles away from you ^^) and if you don't like the game then join a different server or stop playing.

That girl was a rape victim and she uses the word yet the girl who wasn't rape was like, "It's a traumatic event and people who've gone through it would agree with me."

Shut the ***** up, it's the internet, flame all you want, they don't know you or what you've been through and don't get all butt hurt, play, get better, and rape them :). Lol.

 » Come ON!

Someone might have said "beauty is in the eye of the beholder", but these days, it would seem more apt to say "Offensive language is in the eye of the beholder".

My wife is the most caring and lovable person in the world, but she can twist words and phrases said in any fashion to be a personal affront to her. She seems to have a great life but a negative aspect of herself, and is easily insulted, when no intent was there. It doesn't happen frequently, but I've seen it happen often enough to be able to observe it.

Assumed intent is most often the procreator of anger. The statements that sting aren't necessarily the ones that someone said in earnest, but more often the statements that YOU believe in earnest, or worry that other people believe about you.

I can't believe this is even an issue. I pvp my ass off and never heard the word "rape" used in anything. My guild certainly wouldn't use it.

If I heard somebody use that term in terms of gaming, I think some 13 year old punk little trickass ***** who sits in his room every free moment sucking off his parents' broadband connection.

Get yourself new friends, guild and server.

 » shocking!

I use the word rape all the time! Man Just got raped by that monster... grow up.. stop complaining cos you have been given the chance.. you could make anything offend you..

for example.. i could say that the name QJ upsets me...
cos thats what we used to call my dead uncle (Quintin Jones) so following suit with the information above.. I WOULD LIKE TO REQUEST THAT the words QJ are not displayed ever again because it makes me feel sad...

whats the difference? or.. the colour blue gives me nightmares.. please dont use it.. or .. the list could be endles.. dont be such babies.. .and have fun.. thats what youre playing a game for.. its not real life you bunch of planks!

 » presidential nomination

that girl should be nominated for president. If you spend all your time worrying about how you might offend someone you won't get anything done.

 » Easily fixed

I can understand that some people might find the trivial use of the word "rape" offensive, and their feelings should be taken seriously. If not by players then by Blizzard. All they have to do is add "rape" to the list of words that are censored. Those who are offended would then have the choice of turning on the filter.

The situation is not so easily solved for the word "gay." Same can of worms, different label.
