pc rules lol first
who the **** writes these articles? games these days arent THAT complicated, except for the idiot that cant run & aim the camera at the same time >_>.......
there is a couple of valid points in there but the author of that article is one of those ppl that will always have something to complain about no matter what
haha i think the revolution will come...
it'll be fun when its like dot hack lol
The thing is the immersion hasn't really reached a new level,
Get some more interactive ways, Like voice recognition, Body face motion tracking / mapping, More interactive Visual and audio displays. But make them STANDARD
The Nintendo console is adding a bit, But overall its not really a large step.
Like the other poster said, If MMO's became like .Hack, that would be a major improvement. I don't believe the technology is even that far away, But Its risky for the company to produce (expensive)
But greater the risk greater the reward.
Zelda The Ocarina Of Time was the best game and no game has ever been better even till this day
Bah, Im sick of the people and their whining. There is innovation in the industry (and yes, more then just Nintendo take part). Games come out with innovative ideas and game play and it seems whenever someone writes an article like this... they just forget about them. Guitar hero, shadow of the colossus, okami, the nintendo DS, the revolution, various mods for a ton of pc games try new stuff all the time... ugh, i cant come up with a lot more off the top of my head... but innovation is still here... it's just risky because it cost sooo much to develop games now... and if the public doesn't share you innovative ideas for games... then you can loose aton of money. Also... games aren't insanly difficult! They're more diffucult then a NES title... but thats because we've thrown in a whole third dimention into the mix and people need to be challenged! Who wants to sit down to a game where they use one button and one button only to play? Kirby air ride fans need not answer.
There have been innovations in recent years. The physics in Halflife 2 comes to mind. Most innovations may not be directly in the individual games, but its there.
Wireless controllers made standard on Xbox 360 and PS3 means no more disconnected controllers during play, or consoles pulled off the entertainment center. Players are no longer chained to the console and TV.
The DS touchscreen is doing some nifty things with games.
The more powerful hardware does not just provide better looking graphics. It also allows developers to do things like put more enemies in a battle, more realstic physics, and more destructive environments.
So while Halo 3 may still be the same old run and gun FPS.... this time the developers will have even more freedom to give us some really impressive levels and battles. Possibly on a scope we have never seen before.
Changes in videogames often happen so gradually, that most people, like the writer of this stupid article, fail to see. Its called evolution.
screw you guys, DS sucks ass and i'm sorry i bought it. innovation can suck my *****, i want my old fashioned kirby back!
I can't believe I read all of that. That was barely interesting.
That was like reading any Michael Moore article - hilarious, in some circumstances true, and just generally an all around wakeup call for game developers. Yeah, sure, he's nitpicking... But wow...
He's not far off... I know I'm willing to sacrifice graphics for a little bit more gameplay. And when he talked about these "all-in-one" game platforms, well isn't he pretty much talking about the PSP without putting those three letters there? Come on guys we can read RSS feeds (whoopee....... i'd rather log on here with my firefox every now and then for my news, thx tho), but our library is a little limited game-wise... Let's see we've got GTA, Burnout, Socom, WWE, Daxter, Lumines, and Syphon Filter that are truly GREAT games... then there's Untold Legends, or anybody tried Smart Bomb? The PSP is under HUGE criticism for being too much of a jack of all trades yet an expert in none... Personally my biggest complaint is if they've given us the ability to have 100 MP3's on the machines, WHY IN GOD'S NAME do I know the lyrics to Crush, Kill, Destroy from WWE SD vs. Raw???? I'd love to have our mp3's run through the game, OR let's just make great games that will be timeless... take your pick...
He made some great points though, and it was a good laugh!

I had a WTF moment when I read this:
Patents.
Did you know you can't have mini-games during a loading screen because of patent law?
I also don't agree with that author. Although some comments were true, such as poor AI. When HL1 first came out, i thought their AI was revolutionary. But little has advanced since then. Even in F.E.A.R., although they do hide and move together, sometimes I am staring right at them, and they are staring right at me with their head sticking out, but they aren't shooting. I take my time to line up the shot to their head, and boom, headshot, too easy.
Other than AI, and games made for men, I don't agree with any other comments. I believe starting you off with a pistol, or in HL2 a Crowbar is the right way to do it with most games. Rainbow Six 3 on the other hand was also an excellent game, that let you choose from the start.
I live FMV, and I already know those aren't actual gameplay.
Not only console, but Far Cry for PC or POP have save points. These are intentional. Although frustrating at times, they are frequent enough, so you don't just keep saving, right before a fire fight.
True, I'd like to see some new genres, but his recommendations are a joke.
Yeah, Ocarina is regarded as the best game "EVAR!!1!1". But, if you look more closely, it's just a 3D clone of Zelda 3, just more advanced, which turns out is a clone of Zelda 1, but more advanced. Is really good, very enjoyable and it really is one of the greatest game in history... and that makes Baby Jesus cry. "Real" innovation never wins.
It's like GTA3, almost the same as GTA2, but in 3D in close 3rd person.
But I prefer new schemes on an old IP, than new features on the same game year through year. (Anything Nintendo > Anything EA)
That's why Katamary was big.
name one innovative psp game.
Luckily we got hombrew!
Not edited by the few big publishers left (ea, ubisoft anyone?)
Can i quote this article on my website?
I thought tokobot was kind of innvative. Meta Gear Acid was also something a bit different for Metal Gear... not the game industry but for MG! lol. Socom:Fire team bravo has voice chat online!!! hello! LOL.
"name one innovative psp game."
Thats easy. Ghost in the shell. At first it looks like a crappy FPS, but it has something very innovative, the tachikoma. I have played a LOT of FPS games in my life, going all the way back to wolf 3d. And while some games let you have a wimpy NPC follow you around with a pistol, the tachikoma in GITS is truely your partner. You have it with you through 95% of the game, it fights well, you can drive it yourself, you can have it follow you and double-team a fight, or you can let it wander ahead and clear out the enemies by itself if you are too injured. You can even change its equipment between missions.
Not the best game ever, but the most innovative thing I have seen in an FPS since the gravity gun.
@Knutselmaaster: yes, you can surely quote it on your website. just be kind enough to give us credit, and reply back with your website too ;)

Nintendo.FTW!!!!
well written, informative and funny.
i didnt know about some of the patents. and there are some very good points in there.
Lets Face it Nintendo are trying new things and most people are loving it and ready to be converted.
Playstation is awesome and I think I will always own one but PSP is just a PS2 with wheels.
PS3 is going to be awesome but im hardly spending $$$$$$$$$$ on it. Its going to have PSP features like music, Video and sweet HD graphics. So its going to be a pimped Playstation. PS1>PS2>PS3 Pocketstation>PSP.
There isnt really any evolution is there.
No to nintendo. DS is truely different. Doesnt have the power of PSP but that doesnt matter.
Revolution is going to be the same. You just have to look at the control to no that. And the game Red steel is going to feature sword fights(please online death match) where you move the control to move the sword.
Think how FUN that is going to be playing something truely different.
Looking at the graphics of red steel they are nothing short of great. The Revolution specs are less because they arent supporting HD.
So if game consoles are cars. Sony and Msoft continue to make their cars faster and more appealing. Where as Nintendo have now started making Hover cars. Hover cars with a touch screen
Welcome home Nintendo. I will be fighting my way down to the store to buy you where as I will be waiting till PS3 drops to like 250bucks
it felt like the other day i was screaming my head off because i opened a ps1 for x-mas but that was like 8 years ago or summat like that. i never thought then that i would be holding a portable game called the psp in 2006 to write this stupid post on a worthless topic. yes its true game consoles will get better and i bet they could have made the gameboy advance (for example) before the gameboy color but if all the major companies did that so much money would have gone to loss and new ideas would be running low.also i enjoy an update of older games such as mortal kombat or sonic and games like these really make you think of the sega or the snes and thinking of these consoles really proves the generation has already begun.
@ #24:
things become smaller and more powerful...
thats evolution, not innovation ;)
Yes.
We want Innovation. I have 3 PCs for Internet,Movies et. I have a IPOD vid for MP3/MP4
I want a Game console for Games not everything else all my other products can do
its rumored that by 2050 the motherboard in a pc will be the size of an atom. as every year the motherboard is halve the size and double the memory
Want a really good example of this? Rainbow Six 3 is an awesome, tactical shooter... it actually requires thinking and talent. No running and gunning like that crappy unreal tournament garbage. Now look at the latest Rainbow Six 4, it SUCKS. It's basically a dumbed down for the console port. A review by 1up.com has this in the review, in big bold letters: "Out with the old, in with the generic."
That seems to be the motto for games these days...
I am not sure if anybody agrees with me but one topic that was not covered in this article is the fact that the majority of RPGs do not have much of an element of exploration.
Most RPGs involve following a path, with the majority of any exploration consisting of sometimes temporarily leaving the path to follow a smaller path that usually leads to an item and then immediately returning to the main path, only to encounter small towns (well, the majority of these towns should be called hamlets, since they are not very big) and occasional areas where the paths widen and must be explored by zig zagging through them. And if you are really lucky, guess what, you now have the option of turning around and returning to an earlier point on the path to get one measly item.
I know thesse are console games, and you are given a task to perform in the game, but why must you be so confined in the game? What if you do not want to always be following one long path?
There is a whole world to explore with no real restrictions in older PC games like Baldurs Gate, Might And Magic 6, Fallout 2, Betrayal At Krondor, Ultima 9, etc. (to name a few familiar ones) so there is no reason why console games should not provide a large virtual world to explore in single player mode without restrictions on where you can go. Sure, there are tasks to perform in the games I mentioned, but you are not actually stuck to performing them in order and can choose to go in the opposite direction and check out other large areas instead of performing that task. Most areas are not even locked until you complete the assigned tasks either. Some gamers would love to play console games with this type of gameplay.
But then, to each his own. Everybody is entitled to his opinion and I am done venting here.
most of the article was basically true ill admit that he went far with some of the complaints but for the most part what can u really say wasnt true? better physics in games is not innovation either its something that should have been there in the 1st place, new technology that can do better physics is not innovation whats new about physics havent u ever jumped outside before?

There is one article that I've held very close to my heart during my years as a gamer. Sure, we got the jiggawatt Playstation 3s churning out more teraflops than a $2000 pc, or an Xbox 360 dishing out ultra-realistic graphics. But, do we really get what we want ?
